Stuck and could use some help.

I am sure you will be hearing more detail from Atlas folks, but it
sounds like some of your files have been corrupted or deleted. Atlas is
set up for use on a network with multiple users. The security file
prevents modification of PD under certain conditions. I know there is
something in the manual as I read something there, but I cannot remember
how I found it. I would suggest looking under "file", "multi-user",
    "security" and "file protection".

    Good luck,

Hi: Relatively new user with likely dumb questions but so stuck.

    1. Sent a error report to Atlas but in the meantime, got internal error
that said protection violation. Manual doesn't say what this is, how it
happened, or what it means. 2. Can't edit primary docs even though saved
as RTF file. Is that related to this protection violation? 3. I'd like
to make some comments about a document but can't figure out whether to
use memo or comments. My thoughts are related to an interview but not
specific to a quotation-more general than that. But it 's not a
theoretical development issue either- they are thoughts and observations
and I can't figure out how to comment in the doc without assigning it to
a quote. 4. Can't access one doc- not sure why. WAs fine the other day
and I didn't do anything to it. But it's greyed out.

    Thanks in advance.

    Deborah,
I'm not sure how basic a user you are - so sorry if this response is too
    simplistic.

    2. You can't edit a primary document easily - on purpose. There is a
special "edit" button on the tool bar (looks like a pencil) that allows you
to edit. Be sure and save your change and exit the edit mode quickly.

    3. Open the memo manager and click the far left button on the toolbar to
create a new, free memo - unattached to anything. It won't be attached to
anything if nothing is highlighted. I keep running thoughts in a single
menu, contact summaries on each PD, and then theoretical memos as the
analysis gets further along. I have attached memos to quotes as almost like
a footnote - thinking about a particular passage. I use comments to
describe what I've done with a document - kind of like a tracking device.
I'm sure there's lots of ways.

    4. Check the manual - there's a part about how to reset the documents.
Pretty simple but I can't remember the terminology at the moment.

    good luck.
    Alice

The LOK file also prevents incoherent editing for a single user with
multiple projects accessing a common document base. But this is not the
problem. It only prevents someone from editing if someone else is already
editing (one-editor-at-a-time principle). The LOG file on the other hand
records all editing activities that took place on the document. If this
file was deleted/forgotten to copy/edited/overwritten by another version/
or if a document was edited outside the control of ATLAS.ti, access is
prevented. For good reasons. Other reasons for not being able to access a
document are more trivial: the file is not where ATLAS.ti expects it to be ....

The relevant chapters in the manual everyone needs to know (absolutely
mandatory if ever thinking of editing documents or moving projects):
    * Project Management
    * Primary Documents
The manual is easy to access: use the online help (F1 key). Almost the
complete manual is in the online help. Let me add, that it is always better
to read the manual before the first flight with the Cessna, not after the
    first crash ....!-)

Copying projects including the documents and auxilliary files using Windows
Explorer is a risky enterprise doomed to fail quite likely especially after
documents used were edited. Just like deleting files on your hard disk
never deinstalls a software (but messes things up significantly).
An ATLAS.ti project is an intermeshed conglomerate of files (or a kind of
data base) that should be handled by better informed mechanism, in other
    words: Copy Bundle.
